On Sunday 19th March, Westfield juniors travelled to Milton Keynes Table Tennis Club, to play Day 4 of NJL.

With Adam, Gabi, Ben and Lucas all respresenting Northamptonshire Juniors in Nottingham, Kettering Smash's Prithvi Menon and Liam Constable stepped in for their NJL debuts. With only 2 points separating the top three teams (Westfield in the middle), the Division 2 title was in the balance.

Our first math was against Banbury, who were top of the division and had the undefeated Toby Dow at number 1. Prithvi was first up for Westfield but he found the awkward serve and powerful forehand of Toby too hot to handle, and succumbed to a 3-1 defeat. Liam was next up, but he couldn't find any consistency early on, and also slipped to a 3-1 defeat. Tor had a great match against the Banbury number 3, and was unlucky to go down 3-2. Prithvi pulled one back to reduce the deficit, but Toby made short work of Tor to restore Banbury's 3 point advantage. We then staged a fight-back. Liam battled hard to win 11-9 in the fifth end against George Fyfe. Tor played as well as I've ever seen, to secure a 3-0 win over the Banbury number 2, and Prithvi made it a brace of wins with another comfortable 3-0 win. This left the match in the balane at 4-4. So it was Liam against Toby for the match, but Toby was in top form and raced to a 3-0 win, thus securing the match for Banbury.

Buoyed by their fighback, the boys went into the second match against CGS knowing that a good result would help take the pressure of the last fixture. And what a result! All three boys played well and we came away with an 8-1 win, the only reverse suffered by Tor at the hands of the CGS number 1, but that match could also have gone our way. On the other table, Banbury were also in no mood for mercy, and beat Highfield A by the same scoreline.

Going into our last match against local rivals Highfield A, we knew that we only needed 3 points to secure runners-up spot. Prithvi was the stand-out performer, cruising to a hat-trick without dropping a leg. Liam had a real battle in all his matches, winning one of his games 3-1, but lost 11-8 in the fifth to both Hubert and Rushabh. Tor was also on the wrong end of two five-set defeats, but can count himsef very unlucky to lose 11-9 to Rushabh. But 4 points was good enough to secure runners-up spot in division 2, and the medals were well-deserved.

Many thanks to Milton Keynes Table Tennis Club for hosting, and to the parents of Prithvi, Liam and Tor, who all atteneded and supported their child.

On Sunday 12 th March, the cadet team of Prithvi Menon, Adam Koszyk and Tor West-Ley
represented Westfield TTC in the final round of the National Cadet League at the
Birmingham Table Tennis Centre. Having gained promotion over the first two rounds to the
top division, there was greater challenge.
They started off their day against Colebridge A; although a 6-0 loss, most of the games were
close.
Next up was Colebridge B, which proved a tighter affair, finishing with a 4-2 loss. Prithvi
and Tor won one a piece and three games went to fifth end deciders – so close!
Knighton Park was the next opponent, and this provided the first success of the day with a 4-
2 win. Two wins each for Adam and Prithvi and two very close games for Tor gave the team
a good boost.
Our penultimate match of the day was against Birmingham 1 with Prithvi taking the only win
resulting in a 5-1 loss. Again, all games were hard fought and proved the determined spirit of
our team. We finished the day on a well-earned high with a 4-2 win against Birmingham 2.
All the players have improved immensely over this season and, on another day, the results
could easily have gone our way. It was a pleasure to coach the players over this season.
Thanks, again, to their families for their help with transport and support.

Sunday 26th February was Day 3 of National Junior League at Milton Keynes.

With Westfield players Adam Koszyk and Tor West-Ley away in Cardiff respresenting Northamptonshire, Lucas Turnbull-Stubbs kindly stepped in.

Our first match of the day was against Banbury, who had been promoted from Division 3. This turned out to be a very close match and Banbury's number one player - Toby Dow - proved to be the difference between the two teams, as he won all three of his matches. Lucas played well for his two wins and Ben and Gabi both beat the Banbury number 3.
Final score: Banbury 5, Westfield 4.

Our second match was against CGS, whom we had played in the previous round. Good performances from Ben and Lucas saw them both record maximums. Gabriela was unlucky not to add to the total, going down 3-2 against the CGS number one.
Final score: Westfield 6, CGS 3.

Our third and last round of the day was against Highfield A, who had been relegated from division one. This was going to be an interesting match, as all the players know eachother well, and have played eachother many times before. On this occasion it was Ben and Lucas who excelled and both recored fine hat-tricks. Ben only dropped one end, whereas Lucas had a tough 3-2 (11-9 fifth-end) win against Hubert Malenda. Gabi didn't add to the scoresheet, but her game against Hubert was very encouraging, and if she continues to play the same way, results will come.

The fourth (and final) day is on Sunday 19th March. Ben, Gabi and Lucas are not available as they are on duty representing Northamptonshire Juniors, so Tor, Prithvi and Liam will represent Westfield.

Day 2 - Division 2: 22nd January 2023

The Westfield team of Ben Aldridge, Adam Koszyk, Gabriela Koszyk and Coach Kevin Bird, travelled to Milton Keynes Table Tennis Club, to play Day 2 of National Junior League.

The team had gained promotion from Division 3, so I was looking forward to some competitive table tennis.

The division consisted of four teams, each with three players. Each match consisted of 9 singles, so everyone played eachother. The matches were played on one table, so a long day was in store.

Round 1: Luton Table Tennis Club

Luton had been relegated from Division 1, so we were expecting a good match. Disappointingly, we lost 8-1, which I don't feel is a reflection of our ability. It felt like we were caught cold (which shoudn't have been the case as we arrived in good time!). We made far too many unforced errors, and at times, didn't seem to have the self belief needed to win matches. Adam did show glimmers of his ability by picking up our only point.

Round 2:  CGS Table Tennis Club

This round saw us play against three payers who all sported some kind of combination bat (reverse and pimples, reverse and anti-spin?) - which is unusual at this standard. Adam showed maturity beyond his years and posted a fine hat-trick. Ben followed up with a brace, as it took him a bit longer to get used to the pimples. Gabriela didn't add to the scoreline, but did gain valuable experience playing against this type of style. We ran out 5-4 winners, which I think was the right scoreline.

Round 3: Milton Keynes B

Our last round was against Milton Keynes B. Ben and Adam were now fully warmed up and playing to the standard I would expect, with both players only dropping a single end on their way to comfortable hat-tricks. Gabriela came very close to adding to the Westfield scoreline when losing 11-7 in the fifth end to the Milton Keynes number 2. A 6-3 win was a good finish to a long day.

The divisions will now be fixed for days 3 and 4, so we'll compete in Division 2, and look forward to the challenge.

On Sunday 8th January, Westfield cadets travelled to Birmingham to play in round three of National Cadet League.
With Adam Koszyk unavailable, Matthew Swarbrick kindly stepped up, and was joined by Prithvi Menon and Tor-West-Ley.
The team was in for a tough day, as they had rightly been promoted to Division One, on the back of previous good results.
Our first match was against title favourites Colebridge A, who justified that favouritism by sweeping us aside 6-0, and in the process did not drop of leg.
Colebridge B were next, and although the scoreline was again 6-0, Tor was unlucky not to pick up a win. Having been 2-0 down, he played really well to level the match, but just ran out of steam to go down 7-11 in the decider.
Third round was against Knighton Park. Prithvi picked up our first point, but really should have had a brace, when going down 9-11 in the deciding game againsgt the Knighton Park No. 2. Matthew was starting to find his range and played really well in his 2-3 defeat to the KP No. 3. On another day this fixture could have been a 3-3 draw, rather than a 5-1 reverse.
Round four, and we are playing a strong Birmingham 1 side. They made short work of us, only dropping two ends on their way to a 6-0 victory.
Last round of the day was against Birmingham 2, and unfortunately it was another 6-0 defeat, although Prithvi and Tor were both unlucky to lose their matches deuce in the deciding end!
Overall, it was a challenging day, but the boys enjoyed themselves, and now know what to work on to progress to the next level.

Thanks go to Natthew's and Prithvi's parents for help with transport, and I wish the boys well for Day 4, later in the year.

The opening weekend of the National Junior League took place on Sunday 11th December in Milton Keynes.
The team of Ben Aldridge, Adam Koszyk and Gabriella Koszyk, her first time playing in this event, competed in 3 matches in division 3 in a best of nine format.
The team started off successfully with a 9-0 win against Highfield C.
This was followed by the toughest match of the day against Banbury: Ben lost the opening game to Toby Dow, followed by another loss from Adam against George Fyre. Gabriella put us back on track with a 3-1 win against Ben Shanykugn but Ben was pushed too far by Ben Fyre, losing in 5. Gabriella couldn’t extend her winning run, going down to Toby Dow and George Fyre, but Adam and Ben pulled it back, winning their final games resulting in a 4-5 loss.
The final game was against Warren Springs B which the team won 8-1. The score does not reflect the tight nature of the hard fought and long match with 3 games going to 5 ends.
These results should mean that the team compete in division 2 on their second day.
Well done to all the players – it was an enjoyable day with everyone giving their best.

On Sunday 27th November, the cadet team of Prithvi Menon, Adam Koszyk and Tor West - Ley represented Westfield TTC in the second round of the National Cadet League at the Birmingham Table Tennis Centre.
They started off their day with a 5-1 win over Birmingham 4, Adam lost to Jaydon Baker, but a broken finger hampered his play; despite the one loss this was a good, solid start.
Next up was Birmingham 3 which proved a competitive game, finishing with a 4-2 win. Prithvi got us off to a strong start with a 3-0 win over Adrian Li; Adam was next up against Gopal Rathore and won in 4 deuce ends. Tor was then unlucky to lose in 4 close ends to Nokulus Lam before Adam and Prithvi extended the lead.
Colebridge C was the next opponent, and this proved another comfortable affair with a 6-1 win.
Our penultimate match of the day was against Colebridge D with all the games being won in 3, leaving the final match against Knighton Park, the other undefeated team. This proved one game too far which we lost 1-5, Prithvi being the only player to be successful. The final placing means the team should then be placed in the top division for the forthcoming matches.
Well done to all players on another successful day! Thanks, again, to their families for their help with transport and support.

Westfield TTC
On Sunday 6th November, the cadet team of Prithvi Menon, Adam Koszyk and Tor West - Ley represented Westfield TTC in the National Cadet League at the Biringham Table Tennis Centre. Each player contested 2 games per match.
They started off their campaign against Birmingham 4 with a straight forward 6-0 win, with just Tor needing a 4th end to beat Ethan Ho. The second match was against Cheslyn Hay Tigers and, again, the trio proved too strong for their opponents  with no game going beyond 3 ends.
Next up was Birmingham 3 which proved a tighter affair; Prithvi was first on against Gopal Rathore, winning in 4 ends followed by Tor who lost in 4 against Alvyn Baskaran; Adam didn't drop an end against Nokulus Lam and Pritvi went on to stage a comeback against Alvyn winning from 2-0 down; Adam was unsuccessful against Gopal but Tor won a tight final game to win the match 5-2.
Beechcroft Rd were the next opponents  and this proved another comofortable affair with a 6-0 win.
Our final match of the day was against Colebridge A who were also boasting an unbeaten record after 4 matches. Their team of Aarif Li, Rex Ho and Angus Li proved too strong for our players and ran out a 6-0 win, but it proved a good learning experience and we hope to come back fighting in our next meeting.
The succesful first day left us second in the table to the leaders Colebridge A who we will play again in the second meeting later this year.
All 3 players excelled in their play and team spirit; thanks go to the parents for their transport and support during the day!
