Junior British League Success

News image

On Saturday 12th July, Henry Simmons, Richie Bailey, Ethan Ali and coach Kevin Bird attended the Junior British League play-offs at the Meres Leisure Centre, Grantham. Twenty one boys teams were playing for seven places. The five group winners would get automatic promotion, and the five runners-up would play for the remaining two places. Westfield were in a group of five and were seeded second. The team had arrived at Grantham in good time, and the boys had warmed up properly. In comparison their first opponents, Littleton Lions, had incorrectly read the documentation and subsequently turned up thirty minutes late. Their lack of a warm-up certainly helped Westfield’s cause, and the team ran out 5-1 winners which was probably a slightly flattering result. Great Stukeley were next with a completely different, and much stronger, team to that published! Westfield managed to draw 3-3, but had an inferior leg count. Therefore, the boys now needed to win the remaining two games if they we...

Ramsden Delivers Again

News image

It was a magnificent fourth National single's title for Westfield's Alex Ramsden as he stormed through the U14 National Boy's Singles competition at Doncaster on Saturday 31st May. He beat surprise finalist No. 6 seed Joe Clarke 3-0 in the final but he had to dig deep in the semi-final when he had an epic battle against Yorkshire's Shayan Siraj, eventually prevailing on his fourth match point in the fifth (11-7, 10-12, 11-8, 9-11, 14-12). Afterwards, Alex said: “I’m feeling really happy that I’ve won it, because I was quite nervous today." Alex has now won National singles' titles at U11, U12, U13 and now U14 events. In addition to cap off a superb day he combined with James Smith to win the U14 doubles event retaining his title from last year. Westfield's Bhavika Mistry had some good wins on Saturday and was rewarded with a bronze medal in the U13 girl's event at the U11-14 National Championships losing in the semi-final to...

Wellingborough League Successes

News image

Monday 5th May saw the finals of the Wellingborough League Challenge trophy, sponsored by Stanley L Hunt (Printers) Ltd, take place at Old Grammarians Sports Club. The young Westfield C team of Travis Holly, Ethan Ali, Cameron Elliott and Richie Bailey (reserve) were pipped to the post by another youthful team, Jack Bain, Chiraag Modha and Rishan Patel from WDHA. Both teams were a credit to their clubs in winning or losing their individual matches. The evening was also a celebration of Westfield TTC's achievements this season as the League awards evening took place at the same time compered by the county Chairman Ken Marchant. Disappointment in the Challenge Cup was balanced by Westfield C winning Division Two and in addition Richie Bailey won the Top 8 title beating Ethan Ali into runners-up position. The Westfield A team once again retained their Division One title and Alex Aston had the honour of securing the Seoni Merit Award for the highest av...
