Jack Coleman, John Fuller, Dawid Przbysz and Terry Cardwell
Report by Jack Coleman
The team of John Fuller, Terry Cardwell, Dawid Przybysz and Jack Coleman travelled to BATTS Harlow to start the second weekend of a very strong division two south. Our first match was against a powerful DHS London Progress III team which proved it in the first weekend. Terry Cardwell was up first against a very strong Chinese player, Sherwin Remata who proved too dominative and fast. John Fuller then levelled the scoring with a convincing 3-0 victory against a very attackive number 2. Jack Coleman was then up playing his first Senior British League game this season and against an awkward defender with an unorthodox style, Togenes Savorin. It went down to the fifth game but Jack with a bad start couldn’t peg back a large and early deficit. Again, another strong attackive player was too much for Dawid and the 11-7 12-10 12-10 defeat for Dawid was very close. Then John Fuller rose to the plate as an amazing defensive and attackive performance saw him win in convincing style to the strong Sherwin Remata that had gone unbeaten. Could this be the turning point in this game? Then Terry played the unorthodox player and the struggle showed in the 3-0 defeat for Terry. 4-2 down with two matches to play and Dawid played well under pressure against an attackive player to win in straight games in convincing style. With Jack playing the last match he needed to win to get a draw against a fellow junior, William Morais, he had lost to in the past. A tense game saw Jack 2-1 up but the consistent Progress number four won the crucial points and won 11-3 in the decider.
The afternoon game saw Westfield play another strong side from Horsham with Jon Hall, a very strong player as there number 1. Terry again went first for Westfield and really had nothing to lose against a much stronger Hall. With outstanding counter attacking play from Terry saw him level pegging with Hall up to 2 sets a piece. However a poor start in the decider made Hall stamp his authority and won comfortably in the fifth end 11-1. But then on it was Westfield who showed class. Fourth game wins for John, and then Dawid and Jack made Westfield march 3-1 clear. Then Jon Hall was playing again and John Fuller was mighty close in the first just losing out 12-10. Then Hall upped the pace which was too much for the defensive style of John, eventually losing 12-10 11-3 and 11-6. Then the tightest game of the day saw Terry Cardwell playing a consistent Lewis Mayhew. With Mayhew taking the first two ends the results looked imminent however a persistent and still confident dragged the third back to win it 11-9. Then Terry grew in confidence and his game improved and resulted in awesome comeback to win the last two games 11-6 12-10. Then, Dawid and Jack followed up with great performances to win the match 6-2 overall – a great result for the team against a strong side.
The second day came and we had another tough day with Bedford Modern first who had put out a much stronger side knowing that they needed points that day. John Fuller started this one against a strong Mick Harper whose experience played its part as he frustrated John with his soft touch and amazing angle play. This was also the case with Terry and a Chinese number one made light work of Terry playing fluent and very fast. Then Dawid started well in the third match against John Alsop and took the match 3-1 in convincing style, Dawid best match of the weekend so far. Then, Jack played a slightly stronger junior who did not play well at all losing 3-0 easily. Then the comeback started, 3-1 down at the halfway point and john fuller again stood up the plate with a fair amount of pressure against the strong Chinese player and the game was intense as strong attack played strong defence. But John’s variation got the better of the number 1 and John edged the win in a close fifth set 11-9. But then the dominance of Mick Harper showed again as Dawid really struggled and got beaten comfortably 11-5 11-9 11-6. But it wasn’t over. Terry, who didn’t have a good first game, held his ground and came fighting back and he beat an on form Ben Gardner in a five set thriller 11-9 9-11 9-11 11-9 11-9. Then it was down the young Jack Coleman versus John Alsop to decide whether this tie is a win for Bedford or a brilliant draw for Westfield. Jack, with his attacking style made a very strong and dominative start edging the first end 11-9. Then the second could have gone either way with Alsop winning it 13-11. The next two ends were then shared leaving it down to a five end decider again! Jack made an excellent early start getting the change of ends 5-2 ahead, but then a timeout call changed Alsop’s game and he pegged it back to 7-6. But Jack’s resilience to lose paid off as he won the next four points to bring it back for Westfield 11-6. An excellent result for the team in the overall group standings.
Our final game saw us up against the second place team Fellows Cranleigh whose number one was unbeaten for both weekends. John Fuller got the team off to the best start with a very strong performance against their number 2 in four ends. Then Terry Cardwell came up against the very strong Umair Mauthoor. He proved too strong for Terry but the 11-6 11-9 11-9 score line meant it wasn’t easy for him. Then, Dawid put up a great fight back after a poor start and he found himself 2-0 down in ends and struggling. But again the persistence of the Westfield team proved vital as Dawid’s performance increased by the point and his positivity increased too and he battled through to win 3-2, 11-7 in the fifth. Then, on form Coleman made his mark again as he powered through Ray Lam very convincingly 3-1. But the strength of the Mauthoor brothers showed again as they dominated John and Dawid respectively. This left Jack Coleman to save the draw again. After a poor start in the first game, he recovered to go 2-1 after playing excellent table tennis. But a poor start in the fourth go to a decider. Jack again made the perfect start going 5-1 up and serving really well, and then it was plain sailing from there as Coleman guided it home to get another fantastic draw for Westfield 11-6.
The team as a whole performed very well over the weekend and everyone had amazing performance to reflect on.
Division Two South – report by ETTA
This division can hardly be closer, and after two rounds of matches Ashford II lead the way with 12 points with York Gardens I (11 points), DHS Greenhouse Progress III (10 points) and Fellows Cranleigh (nine points) all ready to pounce.
With three wins out of four Ashford (with a settled side of Robert Lemon, Adam Brewer, Trung Tran and Anthony Johnson) retained their slender advantage although Sunday morning again proved to be their undoing. In the first round of matches they had been well beaten 6-2 by DHS Greenhouse Progress. This time they fared even worse, sinking 7-1 against a strong Fellows Cranleigh team of Umair Mauthoor, Zayd Mauthoor, Ray Lam and Anthony Kent. Trung Tran was their only winner as he edged out Anthony Kent 8-11, 11-4, 11-7, 3-11, 12-10. The ever-improving Ray Lam scored two excellent wins, getting the better of Anthony Johnson 11-5, 13-11, 6-11, 11-2 as well as Adam Brewer
11-9, 11-5, 11-9.
In their other three games Ashford were the model of consistency. They beat Horsham II 6-2 with Trung Tran and Anthony Johnson both staying undefeated and they made no mistake against the luckless bottom side Bedford Modern I, winning 8-0. Bedford Modern will quite rightly feel hard done by, losing four fifth enders. Hamish Yeung missed out 10-12, 12-10, 9-11, 11-9, 9-11 against Adam Brewer in the first game and his team’s luck never really changed. Ashford made amends for their Sunday morning mishap by beating Pavillion Brighton II in their afternoon fixture. The redoubtable Mayur Majithia won both of the Sussex side’s games, overcoming Adam Brewer 11-6, 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-5 and the hard-hitting Robert Lemon 10-12, 11-4, 11-7, 11-2.
Hungarian Rita Kacsandi will be a new name to most British League followers, but, York Gardens appear to have unearthed a gem of a player. Carrying on from the first weekend she displayed excellent form as she beat both Sullivan Morais (11-5, 13-11, 11-6) and Sherwin Remata (11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-8) in her team’s 5-3 victory over DHS Greenhouse Progress. In her side’s Rita 4-4 draw with Fellows Cranleigh she missed out 11-9, 11-6, 11-5 against Umair Mauthoor (who remained undefeated all weekend) although she made no mistake in her second singles, crushing Ray Lam 11-3, 11-6, 11-3. With Umair and Zayd Mauthoor both beating Wing Yung Chan Cranleigh had moved into a very impressive 4-1 lead in this match, but they couldn’t capitalise. Another newcomer Tibor Pofor just saw off Zayd Mauthoor 7-11, 11-4, 9-11, 11-3, 13-11 and York Gardens no. four (yes no. four!) Dorian Robinson secured the draw by getting the better of Anthony Kent 11-4, 11-8, 11-9. Rita Kacsandi made her mark against Pavillion Brighton as well. She missed out 11-5, 6-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-13 against an inspired Phil Richardson, but, she hit back hard in her second singles, getting the better of Mayur Majithia no less: 11-4, 7-11, 3-11, 11-7, 11-9. However, it was the impressive play of Pavilion’s Gary Bonner which deservedly won the Player of the Match Award in this game. Gary beat both Dave Bangerter (13-11, 12-14, 11-4, 8-11, 11-4) and Tibor Poor (11-7, 11-8, 11-7) - two very good wins.
Fellows Cranleigh lost the chance to move into third place when they were held to a draw in their last match by a determined Westfield II. Umair Mauthoor duly won his two singles but Westfield hit back very well in the remaining games. John Fuller scored a fine 7-11, 11-5, 11-3, 11-6 win over Zayd Mauthoor, David Przybysz a five-set victory over Anthony Kent and Jack Coleman scored two excellent wins, beating Ray Lam (3-1) as well as Anthony Kent (3-2) to earn his side a share of the points. A very hard earned point for the Northamptonshire team.

Report by Sam Wildman
Although the table may suggest otherwise, Westfield II will still believe they can stave off the worry of relegation from Division Two (South). After four games and two points accumulated, the squad of John Fuller, Terry Cardwell, Dawid Przybysz, Jordan Dainty and Sam Wildman came back from Harlow with the feeling of ‘what might have been.’
Fellows Cranleigh were one of the sides promoted with Westfield last season, and the two met again as early as the first encounter. Unlike last year, where Westfield generally came out on top, Fellows Cranleigh provided a much sterner test. Terry Cardwell was unlucky in a four-game defeat to Zayd Manthoor, where, particularly at the latter stages, serves became crucial. John Fuller then squared up proceedings, with a hard-earned victory over the ‘massive looper’ Ray Lam. And when Jordan Dainty, on his British League debut, took the second game 11-2 against John Tendler, things seemed to be on the ascent. But the stubborn defender fought back brilliantly to regain the lead for the Essex-based club, a lead which was furthered when Anthony Kent scraped past an out-of-sorts Dawid Przybysz. Fuller then got the ball back rolling with a comfortable defeat of Manthoor, and Cardwell superbly beat Tendler. Lam then surprised everyone with the manner of his victory over Przybysz, the Polish player unable to control his topspin. With Dainty requiring a win to give Westfield a point, he continued his recent good form with a crisp four-end win.
The afternoons’ match saw Westfield face Brighton Pavilion II, and what an epic it turned out to be. Perhaps the match of the weekend saw the meaty hitting of Gary Bonner against the articulate defence of Fuller, with the Brighton player just prevailing 12-10, 4-11, 10-12, 11-9, 13-11. Terry Cardwell also lost against the aptly-named Jack ‘Thunder’ Bolt, before Przybysz halved the deficit by beating Kevin Green in four. Sam Wildman’s British League debut started disastrously as he was comfortably beaten by Shaun Parsley, and things looked gloomy when Bolt played Fuller off the table. And even further so when Przybysz was 2-1 and 9-3 down to Bonner. Remarkably Dawid turned it around to win in five, and an inspired Cardwell followed suit against Parsley. Whilst the last game was hardly top quality table tennis, it at least lived up to the promise of the previous encounters. It looked as if it was Westfield who were destined for the draw when Wildman took the third end 16-14 to go 2-1 up, but a combination of good shot selection and luck for Green saw him edge it 13-11, 11-9.
The next morning, Westfield produced a comeback of Istanbul proportions. With York Gardens placing the impressive Rita Kacsanoi at number one, it looked a good shout as she beat Cardwell before Dave Bangeter eventually overturned an early poor start to beat Fuller in five close ends. After Alex Facey and Bangeter had beaten Wildman and Dainty respectively, Westfield were 4-0 down. Cue the comeback, started by Fullers’ brilliant display of variety against Kacsanoi. Wildman then gained his maiden British League win over the late-arriving Simon Holohan 11-9, 11-6, 11-1, and when Cardwell battled past Facey in four the impossible suddenly seemed possible. A confident Dainty got off to a flyer beating Holohan 11-3, before the nerves set in. A shaky game saw Holohan peg him back, but Dainty’s consistency, or Holohan’s lack of it, saw Dainty win and Westfield scrape a point.
Westfield were then brought back to Earth with a bump. Fuller proved to be unlucky in five again, losing 11-3, 11-5, 3-11, 5-11, 14-12 to Adam Brewer, before Cardwell was beaten by Alex Green lookalike Robert Lemon. After Dainty and Wildman both lost in tight four-end matches, Westfield faced the task of repeating what they had done earlier on in the day. Could they do it again? Errrr… no. Amazingly Fuller lost his fourth five-ender of the weekend, this time 11-9 to Lemon, and Dainty lost to Brewer in four. Cardwell was then comprehensively beaten 11-3, 11-5, 11-7 by Nicholas Ravalel, before a much more confident Wildman played well in a narrow loss to Anthony Johnson.

British League 3rd weekend - Sunday 11th January 2009
Match report by John Fuller - Team Captain
Westfield 2 went into the weekend in top spot, with a lead of 3 points, but knowing that they had the 2nd and 3rd placed teams to play. The squad was weakened by the illness of Matt Carter and an injury to Amrish Rana. In the opening match, Westfield took on 3rd placed Woodfield 1. John Fuller opened the match with a 3-1 victory, but this cancelled out by a 3-0 defeat for Dawid Prybyscz. 2 fine victories for Joel Carton (3-2) and Jack Coleman (3-1) put the team 3-1 ahead. However, the next 3 matches went against Westfield, with John Fuller losing 3-1 and Joel and Dawid both losing late in the 5th. Jack Coleman went 2-1 down in the final rubber, but fought back defiantly to take the final 2 ends and rescue a 4-4 draw.
The final match saw Westfield take on Carrara Polska 2, who included a new No. 1 in Klandia Szadrowska, the National Ladies No. 10. She opened the match was a 5 end victory over Dawid but there followed 3 easy victories for John, Jack and Joel, and Westfield had another 3-1 lead. Things looked good when John then ld the Polska No 1 2-0, but she fought back to take the next 3 game 14-12, 11-8, 12-10. Dawid then secured his first win of the day, in nail biting 11-9 in the 5th. However Joel lost in 4 and it was again down to Jack in the final rubber. Jack produced another controlled display to win 3-1 and Westfield had triumphed 5-3 against their nearest challenges, to retain their 3 point lead at the top of the table. With one weekend to go, Westfield have promotion in their grasp, with Jack Coleman the hero after his 4 wins out of 4.

Division Three South & Midlands - The results for the third round matches for this division have been received late, but, leaders Westfield II will enjoy reading about their exploits, as this weekend took in games against their two closest rivals.
Third-placed Woodfield proved a tough nut to crack and although Westfield led 3-1, they eventually to had to settle for a 4-4 draw. Woodfield's Radek Mlynarczyk was the outstanding player involved and he scored two good wins: 11- 1, 14-12, 11-6 against Dawid Przybyxz and 12-10, 11-4, 7-11, 11-6 against John Fuller. Woodfield's Chris Burgess levelled the scores by beating Joel Carlton 11-9, 12-10, 4-11, 9-11, 14-12, whilst Andrew Rich gave Woodfield a 4-3 lead by beating Dawid Przybyxz by a last gasp 7-11, 9-11, 14-12, 11-7, 11-9 margin. The last game of the match was predictably hard-fought as well and Jack Coleman earned Westfield a share of the points by beating John Patel 5-11, 11-1, 8-11, 11-9, 11-7.
Westfield led 3-1 against second-placed Carrara Polska II as well, but this time they managed to win, 5-3. Polska's newcomer Klaudia Szadkowska (ranked no.20 amongst England's Ladies) scored two outstanding wins: 11-4,11-5, 9-11, 9- 11, 11-9 against Dawid Przybysz and 3-11, 6-11, 14-12, 11-8, 12-10 against defender John Fuller, but it wasn't enough. Dawid Przybysz restored Westfield's two game advantage by beating Adam Trela 11-6, 6-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-9 and although Maciej Nakielski pulled one back for Polska by beating Joel Carlton 3-1, Jack Coleman again came up trumps for Westfield in the last game. This time Coleman beat Josef Woznica 11-9, 13-11, 9-11, 11-8.
Fourth-placed Fellows Cranleigh (led by England no. 76 Emran Hussain) will be looking to leap-frog the two teams immediately above them in the last round of matches. Fast-improving Hussain was undefeated as they beat another London side-Mossford II 7-1, as well as OLOP Impact II (5-3). Hussain struggled slightly against OLOP, and he had to pull out all the stops to beat both OLOP's Daniel Moses and Steve Murgatroyd over five ends. Liam McTiernan caused Fellows Cranleigh the most problems and he scored two excellent wins: 10-12, 11-7, 13- 11, 5-11, 11-9 against Ray Lam and 11-4, 12-10, 11-6 against John Tendler.
It was honours even when VRS Generation II faced OLOP Impact I and it was Keith "Charlie" Childs who dominated the action, beating Liam McTiernan over five ends, as well as Daniel Moses (3-1). VRS led 4-3 but McTiernan earned his side a share of the points by beating Danny Lucking over four well contested ends in the last game: 15-13, 5-11, 15-13, 11-7.

20th/21st September 2008
The Westfield II team for the Saturday matches was Amrish Rana, Dawid Przybysz, Joel Carlton and Matt Carter.
The first match was against another young side Southampton West, this proved to be an ideal start to the weekend with two wins each for Amrish, Dawid and Matt. Joel just missed out on his double going down 3-2 to the Southampton number two, giving the team a fine 7-1 victory.
The afternoon match against Woodfield I proved to be a far closer contest with some excellent close matches. The highlight being Amrish coming back from two sets down to beat the highly rated Woodfield number one Radek Mlynarczyk 14-12 in the fifth. Joel collected another pint for the team and Matt picked up a further two wins including the final rubber to earn a well-deserved 4-4 draw.
For the final match of the weekend the opponents were Fellows Cranleigh with Dawid and Matt teaming up with John and Amrish. This match witnessed another excellent comeback, this time John two sets down to Ray Lam, recovering to win 11-9 in the fifth. This was John's second win of the match, added to a fine double from Dawid and with Matt winning his two games to remain unbeaten over the weekend. Giving the team a conclusive 6-2 victory.
